About Us
The Maudsley Philosophy Group, based at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK, is formed of clinicians, researchers, and philosophers.
The group started in 2002 as an informal reading group. Early interests included the phenomenological basis of psychopathology and the different models of mental disorder prevalent in psychiatry (e.g. biological, psychological, sociological). The group organised key conferences at the Institute of Psychiatry in 2002 and 2005 (See Projects) on psychopathology and philosophy and group members have produced a range of publications on this topic. A questionnaire for use by clinicians to probe the models of mental disorder has also been developed. The questionaire was subsequently used in a study of psychiatrists' concepts of metal illness.
More recently the Group has organised a series of seminars and high profile lectures which brought together clinicians and researchers with philosophers and public intellectuals. It has also developed relations with Cambridge University Press and various international scholars to facilitate the availability, for English-speakers, of important but neglected psychopathological texts from (mainly) pre-WWII continental Europe (See Projects).
The Group’s activities are regulated by the Charity Commission rather than by the NHS or by Universities. They are made possible by the energy and goodwill of those who participate, by charitable donations and by the infrastructure support provided by the Institute of Psychiatry and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
